 free clarinet sheet music resources?
Author: Terrell

Hey again,
Are there any online resources for free sheet music?
I know for guitar and bass there's a TON of archives out there for free music. But I can't seem to find anything for clarinet but online stores that sell sheet music for downloads.
Anybody know of anything out there?
I know it breaks copyright laws to publish certain sheet music for free, but there must be a ton of public domain music that isn't copyrighted.

Johng
The key word in my post was "free" I guess you must have missed that : )
I see some in there for $75, some for $100, not exactly free.

Anyway, after lots of searching, I found a site on my own. They have domain free sheet music in PDF formats.
For anyone who's interested, it's at
http://www.free-scores.com/free-sheet-music.php?CATEGORIE=100

Weird that I received no responses, and then I finally get a response telling me to look in the classifieds??
I guess it's some big no-no to ask about public domain free sheet music here?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it....

From the website.
"Any music in the public domain is either entirely out of copyright, or has been placed in the public domain by the composer/arranger/editor. You can basically do what you like with this music - print it out, sell it, change it, distribute it, record it, and perform it, etc."

They stole Syrinx from me; Abe's transcription is not in the public domain, though there are no restrictions.

The problem, Terrell, and it takes a pretty astute lawyer to wade through all the complexities and vagaries of copyright law, is that most versions of music today are still under copyright, although more due to the editing and typesetting than the actual composition. The Mozart Concerto may not be under copyright but Schirmer's edition is. It gets even worse when dealing with foreign copyrights.

The bottom line is that an editor deserves to be compensated for his or her work, and a lot of people enter items into a public domain library by going from a previous printed score into a manuscript program, omit the expression marks and then think that they've produced a public domain version. Most people on this board want to err on the side of caution when it comes to legal issues, and most of us are not learned enough in the law to vet every source of free music to determine if they are legal. I don't think any of us would be willing to chance playing a performance (especially a professional one) with a questionable score, as the financial penalties if we are wrong could be massive.

Remember, just because someone says something's legal, even (or especially) on a web site, doesn't mean it is.

Hi Terrell,

There is a link to a number of places here:

Some of my favourites:

http://frescores.iespana.es/ (Interesting selection)

Also, if you download the free Finale Notepad program, you have access to their 'Showcase' where there's a surprisingly good selection.

Hope this helps,
Steve
