 clarinet mouthpieces

Hi,
I am an adult clarinet player currently playing in a community orchestra, and have pretty much kept up playing in some group off and on since graduating from college. I play a Buffet S-1 B flat clarinet with a Sumner Acusticut 3 mouthpiece any Luyben ligature and use LaVoz reeds. Last year when I was contemplating getting another mouthpiece, I discovered that that particular mouthpiece is no longer made. So I am wondering if folks can recommend a mouthpiece with similar characteristics, or clue me in as to what to look for when purchasing a mouthpiece. (My clarinet and current mouthpiece were recommendations of my clarinet instructor in college, who unfortunately is now dead). Also, I just purchased aused A clarinet - It’s a LeBlanc LL Model 1176, and I will need to get a mouthpiece for this instrument as well. Are the differences in the two instruments great enough that I should look for even a different type mouthpiece for the A clarinet?

You should probably use the same mouthpiece for the A. That's the most common scenario.

As far as what's similar to what you've already got, I can't really help you there. I can suggest that there are a few Vandoren models that are good, as well as Hawkins, Fobes, Hite, Greg Smith, etc. etc....

I highly suggest the Gennusa Excellente. The only place I can find it sold is WWBW. They worked relatively well with broken in good Vandoren V12s. However, I am currently ordering a few new brands of reeds to try. It is extremely accurate intonation wise throughout the instrument and actually made my tone a bit mroe focused and smooth. Upper register is spot on as well.

Give it a shot, they're relatively cheap ($75) and really made in difference in my tone.

I also recommend the Vandoren M15 mouthpiece. It's what I used for 1.5 years before I switched the the Excellente.

I highly recommend purchasing mouthpieces from Woodwind Brasswind as well. They will let you try multiple mouthpieces on approval. If you have the time (and money) for a trip to South Bend, Indiana. Visit their store, and you can try every single Excellente or M15 they have in stock. It's great, and quite fun!

Good luck!

I recommend mouthpieces from Walter Grabner. They are simply magical (at least to me, they feel that way). I would also recommend looking at mouthpieces from Clark Fobes, as I tried my teacher's fobes mouthpiece and it was also superb. Have fun selecting a mouthpiece, and know that you will know right away when you have found "the" mouthpiece.

My Setup:
R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's
Bonade ligature

When you start trying them out I recommend trying the Eddie Daniels. I to play an S-1 Bb and a LeBlanc A. I am extremely pleased and surprised to find it better than what I had been playing with.
