I'm going to see Korngold's opera Die tote Stadt in NYC in a couple of weeks---the score is very lush with beautiful woodwind parts---do others study the score/libretto before attending an opera?

I disliked this particular opera, it did not push my buttons at all.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

No, mostly because I don't go. BUT if I hear a piece on the radio that I have the part for, I will RUN to my music collection, grab the appropriate part and follow along.

Do you mean you follow the clarinet part of an orchestral work?
Seems to me that's a terrible way to listen to a piece of music. Follow the score, by all means, but don't follow just one part, of no more importance in the composer's mind than any other.

I'm surprised there are not more opera fans out there---especially since there are some incredible clarinet parts in many of the scores. The magazine Opera News recently did a feature on the future of opera...its interesting reading.....

Listen out for the 1st clarinet - lots of ravishing solos to enjoy (quite trickey too).

Well, wjk, different strokes etc etc. I enjoy listening to some operatic works but sitting through an entire opera just to hear a few choice selections isn't my thing. I do own a number of operas on dvd and cd and do enjoy them on my terms.
