 Lower joint length
Author: jmsa
Date:   2006-09-22 16:08

I have recently acquired a Selmer Series 9 Star Bb with serial number SXXXX which was produced in 1960. I measured the length of the lower joint and it is 1/16" longer than my Buffet R-13. Does anyone have any information about this. Did Selmer do this to improve the pitch. I would appreciate any comments that are offered. Thanks very much.

Selmers do have longer bottom joints than other makes - my Series 9 Bb has a longer bottom joint than my Leblanc LL, and both these clarinets are full Boehms - the distance between the bottom tonehole and the tenon shoulder is greater on the Selmer than the Leblanc.

It improves the B across the break, though the bottom E (and Eb in my case) is a shade on the flat side.

The only 'normal' clarinets I have are a standard (17/6) Centered Tone and a plastic Yamaha YCL-24 - though the Yamaha layout is clearly copied from the Series 9, which means I have no real comparisons as I don't own any Buffet R13 soprano clarinets - only an R13 Eb and Prestige low C bass.

The opinions I express are my own.
