Yamaha Custom CS "A" Clarinet - Any good?

Hello Fellow Clarinetist!

I work at a local music shoppe, and we just got a Yamaha Custom CS "A" Clarinet is on consignment. I currently have it out on approval until next Wednesday (09/27/06). The price on it is $795. I could possibly talk them down to $600. The instrument and case are in excellent condition cosmetically. The only thing I can find wrong with it is the Low "E" sounds a bit muffled. Also, I notice a bit if a "tinny" sound on notes above third line "B." I'm going to have the WW technician at the store take a look at this. Anyone hear know what that could be? I would imagine a number of things.

Anywho, has anyone heard anything (good or bad) on this particular model?

Dale,

I can't speak of the "A", but I own a CS custom Bb and it is the best clarinet I've ever owned (I had an R-13 for many years, and a Prestige for about 5 years).

Obviously every clarinet plays differently - you can get a wonderful R-13 or a dog, and the same is true of the Yamahas (although my experience is that the Yamahas are a bit more consistent). My CS is wonderfully in tune, with a very dark and rich sound. It is very consistent from register to register, and a joy to play. I have several students who play on R-13's and Opus's - I wouldn't trade my Yamaha CS for any of them. Your mileage may vary. Let your ears be the guide - if it feels right and sounds right, that's all you need to know!

My Custom CS "A" is a fine instrument - as good as anything else I have tried - including Selmers, Toscas and Le Blanc (prior to the Morrie Backun models!). Good tuning, even sound. Possibly it needs a little re-adjustment after shipping? At $750 what else comes close to it?????
