 Vienna Phil in Sydney

As an antipodean we're used to hear good orchestras (apart from our own ones that is) very seldom as the costs of touring to Australia are horrific. The Vienna Phil, however, has decided after some diplomatic efforts on behalf of the Sydney Symphony to play in the Opera House Concert Hall (both concerts are rather predictable I must say but I'm looking forward to hear this incredible orchestra live in my home town).

There is an interesting article on the "Vienna sound" and explanations to the differences in instruments (brass and woodwind) which is worth reading:

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Hi Diz, I don't know if you're free or not, but if you're interested Peter Schmidtl (principal clarinet in the Vienna Phil) is doing a masterclass at the sydney conservatorium while he is in town. Contact me if you want details :)

Nick ... depends on what time it's happening. But sounds like fun.

Hi there nick and diz,

I'm going down on the 26th, and will be there for a while. When's this clarinet masterclass, I'd like to attend if possible? I'm going to the flute one, but a clarinet one would be extraordinary. Thanks

It's on from 2pm-4pm on Friday the 29th of September at the Sydney Con in either the East or West Recital Hall. I believe it's free for con students but $15 for any outsiders wanting to come (so I'm told). I'm playing but still not quite sure what (other than Beethoven 6 excerpts)

Friday 29th will be problematic for me but I'll be there in spirit.
