I tried searching for previous posts on this topic, but wasn't able to find much that was relavent. I've heard that adjusting the height of the register key can help improve the altimisso register tuning and am wondering what a typical opening height would be. I realize that the optimum height is probably different for different people and different instruments, but after looking at the register key on my clarinet I'm thinking that it may be opening too much. I'm playing on a Buffet DG, which has the register key 4mm higher than the R13 (like the Festival, Prestige, etc.).
Would adjusting this height help improve altissimo intonation? If it does, what other aspect would be compromised? Any information would be appreciated.

Assuming that your reg key opens "far enough," try letting it down slowly while you are playing the notes in the clarion and altissimo.
Maybe you can close the gap down a little and speed up the register key movement.
Stop every so often and check to see that your pinch/throat Bb isn't getting fuzzy.

A typical opening height for register key is about 2 mm. You can lower the A2 –C3 notes as much as 5 cents by setting this key height as low as 1mm but a thick, tapered severely like a reverse cone, cork pad is required. Without this taper the throat Bb is usually terribly fuzzy/noisy.

If your height is too great, that will also affect things (obviously), however if the key itself is opening too much, that will create an equally undesirable effect. Normally on an R-13 you would move it up about 2mm, but never more than that-you don't want to get too crazy. Moving the tube does create better tuning, however if moved too much, it will affect the overall sound of the Bb-which already has issues.
Before drilling anymore holes, try adjusting the register key height first!

I've been told to set the opening so you can just slide a nickel under the key. While this may make the throat Bb even fuzzier than usual, you can use resonance fingerings (e.g., put down both ring fingers) or just blow harder. It also helps to take off the register key and clean the metal tube thoroughly with a dampened pipe cleaner.
