Hello: Just finished learning some easier pieces and looking for something that will challenge. I've researced some of his pieces but need advice on which one to start with and which editions to look for. Can anyone rate his concertos by level ? BTW, the Suite from a Victorian Garden is quite pretty, but I was able to play it after a very short time - 1-2 days... Looking for more of a challenge !

As you learn more about Crusell, please share with us. I've been only able to find his 2nd (grand) Clarinet Concerto. Emma Johnson has recorded all three, so the music must be available somewhere.
Evidently Finland has Crusell festivals, so perhaps there is a Finish publisher that prints the Clarinet stuff.
The 2nd movement of the #2 is wonderful and caused me to search for it. Its published in Germany by ars.

you can get all three concertos, i have them. The publisher's i have are
No 1 Musica Rara
No 2 Sikorski
No 3 Universal edition
Emma Johnson has recorded all three but wouls really recomend Tony Pay's recording of them with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, he is directiong the orchestra aswell as soloist.
Also try the Theme and Variations on a Swedish Folk Song, and get a friend an play the three duos

I've only played the first (I think it's the first and I adore it, but I have heard all of them and I believe the third is my favorite. He seems to incorporate a variety of different styles characteristic of other composers for clarinet, which is nice.
I may have those numbers switched up, heh.

I also have the Per Billman crussell recordings (or is it the weber recordings? haha) with the orchestra and love his sound too. I havent played them myself but I love the third concerto especially the last movement.

Per Billman's recording of the Crusell concertos is by far the best on the market. His fluid interpretation is a pure joy to listen to.
Bob Phillips, for a few years Crusell’s life and work has been a special interest of mine. If you have any questions feel free to ask. As far as I know not much has been written about him that has been translated into English other than what Pamela Weston has written in “Clarinet virtuosi of the past.” In Swedish there is a lot written about him, both published books and original documents kept in libraries. So far nobody seems to have shown any interest in having anything translated. Maybe this is something for ICA to take care of. His travel diaries is very interesting reading.

Crusell's quartets are lovely too. I have Op 2 #1 in Eb, Op 4 in c and Op7 in D, the Edition Kneusslin Basel, which are inscribed "for conaisseurs and amateurs". The c minor is included on Henk de Graaf's recording The Virtuoso Clarinet.

VanCott Music (link in the "Music and Books" section of sponsors above) lists Nos. 1 and 3 as available.
In print piano reductions that I have come across are:
No. 1 (Op. 1): Universal and Musica Rara
No. 2, (Op. 5): Sikorski and Universal
No. 3, (Op. 11): Universal, Southern and Edition Kunzelman
I took lessons on No. 2 and I enjoyed it -- some technical challenges but quite playable. I would rate it about the same level of difficulty as Mozart or Weber No. 1. The others I have only looked at briefly quite awhile ago so I can't rate their difficulty.
