I've decided to treat myself to a new mouthpiece and barrel for my 50th. I currently play a " Master Model " buffet, SN D26204 with a Vandoren M15 mouthpiece - I use several different reeds, FOFs, RueLepec 3.5+ and V12's.
I like the M15 for articulation but I do have to work hard to keep things in tune in the upper regester. I've never tried a barrel with this old horn, and after reviewing some posts, it sounds like something I should try ! I've looked at several MP sites and most say they can match MP to barrel....
What I don't understand is this: Shouldn't the barrel also be matched to my horn ? I can kind of understand how a MP and barrel can be matched, but doesn't my horn provide an important variable ? Do people send horns to MP makers ? Thanks for any input.

Hi Wayne,
I cannot speak with absolute authority on this, but it seems that a tight match to the bores at both ends is important. For instance, I believe "Moenig" Buffet barrels are designed to mate a mouthpiece with a relatively large exit bore (Kaspar types, for example) with the R-13 top joint, which has a relatively small bore.
The best thing you can do is to speak with mouthpiece/barrel makers you are considering dealing with. They will give you the third degree about your current set-up and whatever performance/intonation problems you're experiencing.
Best,
Chris

The M15 should be fine.
The tuning difficulties need to be evaluated a bit further. What size barrel are you using now? how many cents off are you on which note?...etc.
Was this always a problem?
Sometimes pad heights change, register tubes get clogged...a host of factors can throw things off.
If you have access to someone else's barrel (Buffet stock barrel, Moennig, Chadash, Segal, Backun, Walter Grabner, Fobes, etc) and it helps, then yes, a new barrel might help.
Disclaimer...I sell barrels.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using the barrel that came with the clarient. Also, I'm about 20C flat above high D. Question: Do people send you the clarient to help match the barrel to the instrument ? Thanks
