 Blue Clarinet Troubles...
Author: bluedazzler

Hi all,

I'm new to this site and looking at all the great advice out there, i need some help.

I own a blue Vito Dazzler clarinet that I have been playing for the past 10 or so years. It has served me extremely well and I want to be able to keep it. Problem is, it recently had a very horrific accident and the mouthpiece is chipped to a point that it is unusable. Right now, it is at the ICU in one of my friend's houses trying to be repaired.

My question is, does anyone know anywhere at all to find a blue replacement mouthpiece???? I AM DESPERATE!!! The model is a Vito Dazzler and the mouthpiece was made by the Woodwind Company; both of which i found sadly are gone. Please help me!!! I'm even willing to have it custom made if i have to. I just want to repair this!

*sigh* But there is another possibility...

In the chance that repair is impossible, i am willing to replace it with another blue clarinet. I have found two that I know nothing about. They are made by Jinyin and Cecelio. If ANYONE has any information on either of these makes, please post below. I don't want to replace my Vito quality with a piece of crud.

Thanks all!! Any information is GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

-Tim

We've discussed the Jinyin and Cecelio colored clarinets numerous times on this bulletin board.

The consensus opinion was to stay away from them...GBK

If visual appearance (not using a black mouthpiece) is so important to you, the other possibility would be to use a crystal mouthpiece.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Probably more trouble than it would be worth, but as a last resort, you could rough up the outer surface of a mouthpiece and paint it with blue epoxy paint.

An alternative to a crystal mouthpiece would be the clear acrylic Pyne Polycrystal (about $40 at Woodwind and Brasswind).

Why, Sean? His clarinet is fine. It's the mouthpiece that's broken. Surely you don't think someone should buy a new clarinet whenever s/he has a problem with a mouthpiece? Or are you objecting to his blue Dazzler? Do you know how he uses the instrument? And surely you're not recommending he replace a Vito with a Jinyin or a Cecelio.

The first company I thought of was Runyon Products.

http://www.runyonproducts.com/mpc.html

Although they don't have a blue mouthpiece listed for clarinet, they do make other blue mp's - and have a stunning red clarinet mp. Point being that they do "color" and might be able to help you out.

I was thinking he should get a red one instead.

most paint will not stick to rubber or plastic
there are some types of spray paint that do adhere to plastic;
you can get it at home depot

that would , however, expose you to getting small bits of paint from the tip into your mouth.... not something i'd try personally, if i want to poison my insides, i use ethanol.

david's idea is better - use a crystal mouthpiece

every once in awhile a dazzler comes up on ebay, keep your eye out.

or buy one of those blue chinese ones from ebay and throw the clarinet away and keep the mouthpiece. most of those sold on ebay cost only $2, but the $200 shipping charge will kill you....

". . . Leblanc has stopped making them this year. It is the same clarinet as the Vito Student 7214 model."

Runyon do indeed do a blue clarinet mouthpiece. I own one! It's the model 22 and really it's not all that bad. Their UK distributor is sax-pro.com.

Thank you SOOO much Bassie!!!!!! I was just about to give up hope on finding anything to make my instrument complete again. I'm actually going to buy two now (just to have a back-up. heh)

I do have one other question though.... what is a facing? They have options for a #3, #4, or #5. Is this like student, intermediate, and expert levels or something else?

Thank you to everyone else also. You all have been soo helpful I am glad I found this site. I don't know what I would have done otherwise!!!

Thanks again,
-Tim

The number is referring to the tip opening, which means the distance from the edge of the mouthpiece to the edge of the reed. Usually, but not always, you will use a softer reed with a bigger tip opening and vise versa. They are all the same level (in terms of begginer, inetrmediate and pro), but some players will like one over the other.
If you know the tip opening of the your Vito mouthpiece, and can find what tip openings the Runyon models are, maybe it would be better to order the closest one, but since there are so many other things other than tip opening that will affect the mouthpiece, and you are planning to order 2 of them, I would just order 2 different ones and hope for the best.
You can also order all 3 models, and then return the 2 you like less if the store allows this.

Obviously, donald, it plays the blue notes better... :-D

I got a #4 facing... plays somewhere like a B45(dot). I guess #5 would feel jazzier and the #3 would feel closer, for afficionados of hard reeds.

I second the suggestion of a crystal mouthpiece or even a clear "Lucite" one. But who would ever notice that you were using a black one !

Better to use a good mouthpiece of whatever color, and paint your ligature blue if you absolutely MUST be color-coordinated. Or however Larry Combs would handle the situation.

But blue it must be .. well .. why not? (Dont't tell me)

It seems, Gigliotti makes blue mouthpieces.
