 Montanaro and Dagon Masterclass

For any of you that attended the Masterclases at OK. Could you pass on some knowledge that you learned from these teachers. I have only heard good things about both of them, but I have never had the chance to work with any of them. Pass some info along if you attended. Thank You.

Hey! I just made an OU Review and I put these masterclasses in there too so all the OU stuff would be together! I hope some other people can give a little more in depth review than I did, but hopefully I gave you a start!

I'll post some of what I remember here...

Both Dagon and Montanaro talked a great deal about tone quality. Dagon focused on some of the physical aspects of good tone production, like the importance of a high tongue position with small changes in different registers, and good abdominal support (which helps in avoiding throat tension, I learned), while Montanaro focused more on the aural aspects of tone, like tone matching throughout registers and mimicking good singers as far as articulation.

After the Symposium this year, the subtle details of articulation have been brought to my awareness. Now every time I get out my clarinet, I just try playing a few notes, starting them with the tongue, but very very lightly tonguing them, and making sure that the tone is full and supported and clear right from the beginning of the note, but without any tongue noise at all. It really is very difficult if you listen for the little things like these. To help in practicing these sorts of things, Mr. Dagon also talked about focusing and centering yourself to help relax before you play. Mental relaxation and focus are huge parts of playing the clarinet well.

Mr. Montanaro talked about numbering notes in phrases according to each of their dynamics, or more artistically, their directions or functions in that particular phrase, so that the clarinetist knows exactly where each note is trying to go in that phrase, or what each phrase is trying to say. I believe Dr. Jane Carl at the UMKC conservatory teaches her students to use a similar phrasing system.

The numbering system was used extensively by Marcel Tabuteau. He assigned "1" to the softest possible note and "10" to the loudest and then wrote out sequences of numbers to desribe the phrasing he wanted the student to play. Boston Records has cd of Tabuteau teaching this technique, taken from tapes made by the late Wayne Rapier.
The most important thing I took away from the cd was that the #3 level is dolce, and carries best of all.
