 Moutain Performance
Author: Sean.Perrin

Hi everyone,

I revieved a very interesting invitaion to play several solo pieces (with or without accompaniment) in the middle of the Canadian Rocky mountains right next to a lake very early in the morning on August 22 and 23rd.

The venue is very interesting because for one it is not really a venue, and acoustic things such as echos are inevitable in the performance.

So, I have been asked to pick some repertoire to play and before I set anything in stone I thought I'd see if anyone had any suggestions for music that would fit the setting or be complimented by the scenery/acoustic properties of it. They would like me to play at least one work by a Canadian composer but other than that it is fair game!

Any interesting suggestions for this unique performance opportunity?

Suggestion #1. Don't play in the altissimo register. It makes the bears angry :-)

Sean

I am planning a trip throught the Rockies this August, starting in Vancouver. I will be spending the night of Aug.22 in Revelstoke then continuing east the next morning. If I have my windows rolled down will I be able to hear you?? [wink]

In my experience playing outdoors yields terrible clarinet acoustics. I would think that at least you would need/want significant amplification.

Yes, amplification and (in Alberta at the end of August) a warm coat... maybe snowshoes, pepper spray for the bears :-)

Might there be anything in R Strauss' "Alpine Symphony" [tone poem?] of use to you ?? Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I do not think that you will be able to hear me ffrom revelstoke... and I agree with the comment about acoustics, they will be a little wonky. I am going to call tomorrow and get some more informatoin about the performance... like whether to expect an audience or if it is just me and nature, with is arguably more artistic!

The Czech Clarinet Quartet played a similar outdoor concert. Their cd is available at Musica Bona...

Perhaps a Bach cello suite or a jean-jean 18 etude? They might sound nice in echo.

Hi.
Might i suggest playing Concerto No. 1 in F Minor for the Clarinet and Piano; it is by Carl Maria von Weber, Op73

It's a great piece and fun to play, and it sound really nice. I would also like to suggest playing either the second or the third movment. They might fit into that outdoor theme.
I hope that the concert goes great and good luck finding a peice.

Nate

P.S.
You could probably find it at any music store if this one sounds interesting to you at all. Again good luck

thank you

Well I always thought Maple Leaf Rag might be good for Canada, that's a piano solo for sure, but that's my brainstorm on it.

Thanks for the help guys...

I've decided (so far) ont he following...

1) Final Soliloquy Of The Interior Paramour - Christian Floisand (composed by a fellow student for the occasion, a premiere)

2) Aubade for Solo Clarinet- R. Murray Schafer

This should fill up my share of the program (if I have time for a third I'll let you know what I pick!) and I will be performing in another work to compliment a French horn.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I will call and try to get full details tomorrow (if they even exist yet). I am pretty sure that it will be just outside of Canmore, Alberta but I will be sure to post whatever comes my way here in case anyone is interested.

Perhaps it is strange I dont' know more about it yet, but I've just been asked to play, i'm not organising the event...

I'll keep you posted Marcia!
