 Sammy Rimington's instrument
Author: tkawai

My friend is interested in Sammy Rimington's clarinet, which looks like a period instrument, he said.
Does anyone know who makes the clarinet, and how he can access to the maker?

Thanks in advance.

Google Images has these photos:
http://banjomeyer.de/fotos/rimington.jpg
http://www.jazzcrusade.com/covers/3045.jpg,
as well as several shots of him with a black Albert system clarinet http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.storyville-records.com/Marts03/Rimington.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.storyville-records.com/Marts03/rimington.htm&h=346&w=350&sz=49&tbnid=kcuUIBsm3XnAtM:&tbnh=114&tbnw=116&hl=en&start=15&prev=/images%3Fq%3D%2BSammy%2BRimington%26svnum%3D100%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26newwindow%3D1%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DG.

Even the black instrument has some old features. The throat A key works by itself, with no link to the separate Ab key.

The light colored clarinet looks like a mid-to-late 19th century model, with standard pads rather than the earlier "salt-cup" style.

I've never heard his records, though. Does he have the "standard" New Orleans sound?

There are several makers who reproduce of old instruments:
Steve Fox http://www.sfoxclarinets.com/Baermann.html
Schwenk & Seggelke http://www.schwenk-und-seggelke.de/englisch/frame.html
Dan Dietrich http://www.danieldeitch.com/eclarins.html
Guntram Wolf http://www.guntramwolf.de/instruments/historical/clarinet/index_clarinet_hist.htm
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarinet_makers

None of the instruments on these sites quite match Rimington's, so he may play an actual old instrument.

What's your definition of the standard New Oeleans tone Ken?

Maybe Edmund Hall, or Irving Fazola -- what Pete Fountain would like to be.

Not bad role models - but Sammy probably sounds more like George Lewis.

I heard him life last year on a local New Orleans jazz-club festival, and he's probably one of the best in his style.

But being a clarinet player who likes the classical sound of a clarinet, I'm afraid I cannot appreciate his sound.

As I said, great in his style however.
