My son (5th grader) started playing the clarinet this year. I dug up an old clarinet that belonged to my grandfather (20 year Air Force Band Soloist). It turns out it is an A clarinet (rather than a Bb) Buffet serial number 148J1 or 145J1 which dates it to 1914 (meaning my grandfather bought it used). It is in great shape and we had it fixed up but but it won't be useful unless/until my son gets to a symphony level. Is there any harm in letting him play it during the summer - I know it is lower than the Bb but he is not hitting the notes anyway?

Check the tuning of the clarinet.
If it is a HP (high pitch) clarinet, it could not be used in any ensembles...GBK

It couldn't be used in the usual school ensembles, but if I read the question correctly, the issue is, will it do the child any harm to fool around with it over the summer, by himself.
I don't see why that would be a problem, ChicagoMom -- and I think you realize that if/when he goes back into a school program, he will need a Bb instrument, right?

presuming it is a Boehm fingering system, no; plus what the others said - just by himself, just for the summer, and you'll need a Bb horn in the fall.
And if its not tuned to A440, you wouldn't want him trying to tune to a meter using this instrument (I usually have beginners work on hitting an open G with a Green light on a tuner, that probably won't work on this instrument).

Learning to play a clarinet involves enough frustrations without having to try to play on an instrument that will probably increase the frustration level thus leading to distaste for clarinet playing altogether. With due respect for your grandfather's career perhaps you can get your son something newer that is known to be playable.
