Mouthpiece manufacture

Besides having my head examined, what are some things to know if I want to try my hand (on a strictly amateur basis) at making a mouthpiece? What are good blanks to use, etc.? Is this even something that should be considered on a "for fun" basis?

I know there's a lot of expertise here, and I'd love to hear what the experts have to say......
