Vandoren mouthpieces are very widely used, by beginners, pros and everyone in between. If they work for you, they are a real bargain. They only cost as much as two one-hour lessons (at typical UK prices, anyway.)
The B45 is one of the more widely-used ones, but opinion differs as to whether it is suitable for the majority of beginners.

Ditto with the M15 and 56 Re Lepic setup. That reminds me - I ought to order a couple more boxes of them. NOW!
YCL-450, do try a 5RV Lyre - I think this will be much better all round, and experiment with different reeds - find the one that has the fullest tone but not in any way resistant.
You'll know if the reed is too hard for you if the lower register is stuffy (hissy) on middle C and E, and too soft if everything sounds flabby and kazoo-like.

I'm sticking with my gregory smith... a good mouthpiece is worth investing in. That said, a B45 is definitely a good first 'real' mouthpiece, just make sure to match it with a quality ligature and reed or you will be wasting your money.

I ordered a 5RV lyre. What's good reed match for that mouthpiece? I already have a Rovner ligature.

Try a #2.5-#3.5. IMO its a much better all around mouthpiece than a B45. B45 is a good jazz piece though.

But as you're fairly new to the clarinet, I wouldn't suggest playing on anything harder than a Vandoren 2 on a 5RV Lyre until you develop your embouchure.
I used a Vandoren V12 2.5 with my 5RV Lyre which was firm enough (though I still use a V12 2.5 with my A1 crystal and Selmer C85 115).

I found the Rue Lepic 3.5 worked best with my 5RV. My B40 prefers a V12 3.

I would say Vandoren (or V12?) 2.5 as far as reeds go, and I would highly suggest the D Bonade reverse ligature... it's less than the cost of a box of reeds and is probably one of the best ligatures around.

For Sean Perrin, attention V12 should be + 0.5 compared to classic. So VD 21/2 = V12 3 (as a guide line)
It is quite funny but either we are very 'classic' over here (I don't believe that) but in Belgium we seem to focus a lot on only few of the VD mouthpieces. (5RV never seen any, etc...)
Since several month, absolutely convinced by B40 (and I have plenty of independent listeners to agree - even unasked for ). Anyhow there must be a (non commercial?) reason why VD makes all this stuff.
Maybe one day I can try them all, and feel for myself ..

It's strange to note this, but the numbers have the most affect on how reeds play for me, it's as if there's some sort of placebo affect. I usually play 4 V12s, and if a four V12 and 4.5 Vandoren were the same in actual strength, I think the 4.5 would feel harder, just because of the higher number. Anyone else noticed this?

B45's seem to be quite popular among students...but I can say with a fair degree of authority the B45 is no where nearly as popular as it was 20 years ago...Vandoren are really pushing the B40 and M20 and M15 as the premiere line of facings right now and alot of people in UK and Continental Europe are using them.

I'm using a B45 and I really like it. I use 2.5 reeds, switching around with what reeds I have. Currently I'm using a Marca. I've also used Mitchell Lurie, Rico Golden, Gonzalez. I think it is to the individual's liking as to what sounds best. I never seem to get beyond the 2.5 reed strength though.
