 Stamitz Concerti
Author: DAVE

For so many years I have used the 3rd Concerto for teaching purposes because it was the only one I really knew. I had a talented student complete this one, so I randomly selected another one and I never knew there was such delightful music for young clarinetists. The one I selected for him was Carl Stamitz Concerto in
Bb Major. I like this one better than the one I have been using (number 3 in E-flat). Are you guys familar with the other ones? Any suggestions? I have so many students who are good enough for Stamitz but not yet ready for Weber.

Dave ... I know the two you mention ... both I adore. I don't think his clarinet writting is particularly well suited to the clarinet as he tends to focus on the upper register and leave the lowest alone. I have a feeling Carl actually wrote four concerti ... but I'll look up Groves and check.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Dave,

There's more. I have this CD by Sabine Meyer/Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in which she plays concertos for clarinet & orchetsra by
Carl Stamitz No. 3 (B flat), No. 10 (B flat) & No. 11 (E flat);
and by Johann Stamitz concerto in B flat.

My daughter has been playing the No3 & 11, so the music is available.

Its good- CD is c 1993 by EMI classics.

I do believe Carl Stamitz wrote 12 concerti, 10 solo and 2 double, but I'm not sure how many are published. Rendall's book on the clarinet is highly informative and may have this information, but I can't remember off hand. I would imagine most libraries have it.

What I am most interested in is which of the concerti you guys enjoy the most and if there are any you do not like. Also it would be nice if there were some sort of ranking of difficulty from easiest to hardest.
