 I've recently had my first opportunity to take a close look at one of those early cases that almost look like a sword scabbard or large holster.  In addition to the handle that I've seen in a few pictures, the thing also appears to have a loop that a wide belt could fit through, or even the strap of a saddle. 
 
Have any of you looked into these and figured out their history?  Were they perhaps intended for military use?

 Very often, they are called a "boot case". Not the best way to transport a musical instrument, but it did well enough for the band of Napoleon's Imperial Guard during their Russian vacation in 1812.
