 Vienna Phil

Tickets for the Vienna Philharmonic's four Sydney (only) concerts (September) went on sale this morning (via the Sydney Opera House website).

Outrageously expensive ... but I guess we've got to sponsor their first class travel.

the price was much more expensive when Berlin phil visited HK.
something like 2500 HKDs (~$300).

Hi Diz,

Do they all travel first class? Damn, what a gig! But they probably need more than one plane, as I don't think you can fit the whole Vienna band in one first class section. Perhaps they charter a plane?

I doubt that they travel 1st class. Australian humour?

My own company has a policy that, for exceptionally long airline trips (and certainly Vienna to Sydney would qualify) employees are allowed to (and reimbursed for) travel in Business Class (not First Class, but close enough). Perhaps the Vienna Phil has a similar policy? 12 or more hours in Coach is not pleasant.

Do their clarinetists play on the Ohler system? Weird ligatures?

I always fly in coach, and the 12 hours to the USA (and 12 hours back, and one times 18 when I went to California) was not pleasant all times I did it, but I would never fly in business or first class even if I can afford it. Although, I am pretty short. My friend who is close to 2m* tall suffers a lot in coach.
Also, business is much closer to coach than to first class, as the price shows.

*For Americans - that is about 6 feet and 5 inches.

Depends on the airline -- coach on All Nippon Airways Washington/Tokyo wasn't all that bad (and I'm 6' tall). Northwest Airlines Tokyo/Chicago was sheer agony!

Seems to me that the last time I saw the Vienna Phil, they were using metal ligatures on their Hammerschmidt clarinets.

I'm 6'1" so coach is a hasstle most of the time, the leg room gives me the tom tits. If I could afford it I'd fly business just to get Qantas' wonderful sky-bed.

Anyway - back to my post, I've actually booked for C reserve tickets (cheapest) in the Concert Hall and that was total of $420 (which is expensive for me). But worth it.

Let's hope the coughers stay away.

Liquorice, you've got some Australian friends, then? You're right, Aussie humour is a little obscure/ironic.
