 Larger bore mouthpiece
Author: rgoldem

I have a large bore instrument and I believe I will get better intonation characteristics with a stout or large bore mouthpiece. I would appreciate if someone could give suggestions about brands and models. Thanks.

Hi R G - since no one has responded [yet}, I'll try. We have discussed big-bore cls a number of times, try our archives Search to perhaps answer your questions. I prefer to match, as nearly as possible, the bore of the mp to that of the barrel to that of the upper joint, believing that the more-smooth, less-turbulent air flow is beneficial, [but have little to support this !] Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Peter Eaton makes large bore Clarinets and mouthpieces specifically designed for them. I haven't tried either myself so I can't recommend them but a quick google should give you information about them.

Pillinger has 1010 mouthpiece for large bore horns.

You can consult with him about its matching with your horn.

RG,

It would also be worth your while to try a Ralph Morgan mouthpiece as Ralph's design has a larger chamber than most clarinet pieces you'll find. A RM28 on a large bore clarinet can be a powerful set up....and quite enjoyable to play.

Good luck!

Roger

I'm not sure if Pomarico crystal mouthpieces still have large bores as I don't own a current one, but the one I do have (although made by Pomarico it's been engraved and sold as a Vandoren A1 at around twice the price of a Pomarico) has a large bore of 15.2mm - which should suit a 1010 or similar.

It works well with my large bore Selmers (both Centered Tone and Series 9 sets) and my aged Selmer basset horn, and worked with the B&H 1010 I once had.
