Just downloaded Benny Goodman's "Rachel's Dream" from i-tunes---what a swinging tune with amazing clarinet work! (99 cents well spent!). Does any one know the story behind this tune?---I believe it was written for his daughter. Thanks.

Rachel's Dream was first recorded by Benny Goodman in a samll group session for Columbia on Dec. 21, 1944, with Red Norvo(vib), Teddy Wilson (p), Sid Weiss (bass), and Morey Feld (drums). This tune, named for his daughter, was supposedly based on a riff which Benny had developed as an introduction to the 1930 Harry Ruby song, "Three Little Words". A transcription of Benny's solo on Rachel's Dream is available in the book, Benny Goodman - Composer/Artist, published by Hal Leonard.

I have a copy of the "Ken Burns JAZZ Collection: Benny Goodman" CD and really enjoy it. I think it's available through Amazon.com and many other stores. It helps me when I'm preparing to play a Big Band or Goodman-era piece.
