 age of a Noblet horn
Author: rgoldem

I have been trying to estimate the age of my Noblet C Artist clarinet (serial B8173). I tried to find a clue in other messages on this board but I found no reference for the letter B. Maybe someone more knowledgeable could help me with this matter. Thanks for any information.

I asked the same question a few weeks ago and got a very good answer form stevesklar, directing me to.........

http://www.saxmaniax.com/snclarinet.htm#LeblancSN

I have had a look again and certainly B****** is alluded to but not with only 4 numbers. Check again to see if one number has been rubbed thin.

Hope this helps a bit.

I used to have a Noblet Artist clarinet when I played in the 70s, and I have been wondering if this is considered a good clarinet or not. Does anybody know? Are they still being made? I can't seem to find them for sale anywhere. Thanks.

Technically speaking, Noblet's are intermediate horns. However, mine is quite good and I believe the older ones are better. However, I am not able to generalize. It seems that some people like them a lot and some people ... well, they just hate them.

the Noblets are considered large bore - i think .590" i have bore sizes on that above link from bob49t.

some people like them some don't - it seems as though sax doublers love them. The 45s have better keywork than the 40s and in certain models other variations such as tighter fitting joints, better springs, etc. the 27 was a 40 w/plastic bell or even some with plastic barrels over the years. there was also a 145 model - i think the artist.

i like them but the true pro LeBlancs have better keywork.
people tend to like the older ones from pre1989 more, and the older the better.

After leblanc swallowed up Normandy in 1978 i think all the Noblet variations went away and they only produced the 40 &45, plus alto, bass, etc. and the 145s ever so often.
