 WOW! What a difference

I was at WWBW last weekend to find a mouthpiece and try a few clarinets. They didn't have the ones I really wanted to try in stock. :-( I wanted to try a Buffet Vintage and a couple of lower end Eb's.

I tried two of each Buffet Greenline and Selmer Signature.

The Selmers were beautiful. Wonderful tone, played effortlessly. Although, one played a little better than the other.

After trying the Greenline with several of the different mouthpieces I was trying out, I put it back in the case. I was really disappointed with how it responded and sounded. I have a Yamaha Allegro and would place it ahead of the Greenline. I know Greenlines are a composite material, but if this represents one of Buffet's higher end products, they need to rethink things.

I ended up purchasing a Vandoren M30 series 13 mouthpiece. Made me realize how whacked out my M13 was playing.

I have a Buffet R-13 "Greenline" Bb Clarinet, and I love the sound and focus. Not every greenline is the same, you have to try more than one.

Not every R13 is the same (or any other for that matter, but R13s stick out in this respect). With how many they make two R13s will often play quite differently. I have not liked the R13 Greenlines I have tried (about 5) they seem to lack some resonance and warmth of the grenadilla. Just my thoughts.

I've owned a couple of R-13 greenlines and have play-tested probably 6 more. When compared side-by-side with a wooden R-13, there is a little difference--but I did find 3 really nice greenlines.

You really need to play more than one to make a good comparison. However, if the sound you want is more like the Selmer Signature or your Yamaha Allegro--you'd best stick to those.

The Buffet Vintage has a wonderful tone--so you might go back and try one when they get one in.
