This may be a little late for some of you to rush to Canada, but tomorrow at noon the "Iguanodon" will be played at the Univ.of Toronto. This is a piece for 6 bass and 3 contra-bass clarinets, composed by the Dutch composer Rob duBois. A few of my friends are playing with the group, but I can't be there - it's income tax season and my boss would be quite unhappy about it. Have any of you played this before? or heard it? From the talk it's supposed to be quite the piece!

I've been told it's from 1982. Recorded? It would be if someone would record it today at noon. We'll have to do a search for one.
These guys are really excited about playing this. How often do you get this kind of opportunity to hear the bass clarinets shine on their own?

If there's interest in this sort of thing, another similar piece was written in the late 'eighties by the Australian composer Michael Smetanin. It's called "Ladder of Escape", and is scored for 7 basses and 2 contrabasses. It's not long (3 or 3 1/2 mins) and was composed for Harry Sparnaay's "Het Bassklarinnetten Kollektif" (sp?) as an encore piece. Judging by the instrumentation, this "Iguanadon" may have been written for the same crowd.
The Australian Music Centre has sheet music, and there is a recording available. Don't have the details now, but I'll get back on when I find out.

"Ladder of escape" is the title of a record with Harry Sparnaay and his group. It has the piece "Ladder of escape" by Michal Smetanin as well as a piece by the spanish composer Enrique Raxach; "Vórtice" (wirlpool) scored for six bass clarinets and three contras. I highly recommend this record both for the high performance level and the political message about freedom.
The label is: Attacca Records (no number visable on the record).

If I remember right, an iguanodon has a hollow hump on its skull that paleontologists think may be a resonating chamber at the top of that massive body, the better to attract friends and scare enemies, basso profundo.
