 Highschool Solos
Author: Ryan Young

Hi everyone. This Board has been much help in the past and I have another question. This years IHSA solo ensemble is tommorow and I feel bad this year for choosing a very easy solo and wanted to get a jump on next year. I would like to play a song that is challenging but not absolutely overwhelming for a highschool student. I have a year to prepair this so I feel that I am up for the test. I do not have a private teacher due to the fact that I have no means of transportation and would like any suggestions.
Thank you all,
Ryan Young

What are solo you playing this year? What grade in school are you? Have you made All-District or All-State Band (if you auditioned)?

Well like i said this year i am playing a song which i consider below my level, Mozart's Adagio and Menuetto. I leared this piece in a week or so and spent the rest of my two months prep perfecting dynamics style and intonation leaving me feeling unchallenged. I am just a freshmen this year and have been playing since 4th grade. I was unable to audition for All-District this year due to some family issues and schedualing conflicts but was First Chair in 8th grade All-District. I have never really played a complex solo but I am looking to move my playing to the next level and I feel i can put forth the effort to achieve the goals that i set.
Thanks again,
Ryan Young

good choices are the nielsen clarinet concerto, the francaix theme and variations, the copland, the bozza bucolique...all good stuff...

other good choices are widor's introduction and rondo, brahms sonatas

The Nielsen, Francaix, and Copland? These are some of the most challenging pieces in the whole clarinet repertoire..perhaps not the best audition choices for most high school players.

The Brahms sonatas are certainly more reasonable (at least technique-wise), and you could probably add pieces like the Poulenc and Saint-Saens sonatas as well.

Of course, it all depends on just how advanced the player is.

Look at the lists of pieces for the British grade examinations; ABRSM and the Trinity exams.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

heres the contest list used in Texas, plenty of ideas there:
http://www.uil.utexas.edu/music/pml.html

click on 'search pml database'
then select 'Bb clarinet'
it lists 3 levels - class 1, 2, or 3. class 1 is hard, 3 is easy.

If you go to the JWPepper website, they have a tab for "festivals and contests". If you explore, you will see what different states are using as audition pieces for their high school district and all-state competitions.

Ryan,

Does your state have a list of approved solos online? If so, an you can give us a link, we might be able to make better recommendations.

Best regards,
jnk

I would suggest the Bozza "Five Bagatelles", the Saint-Saens Sonata, the Bernstein Sonata, or if you are really up to the task, the Messager "Solo de Concours." The Francaix, Copland, and Nielsen are way to difficult for you, I'm sure of that. Most don't play those until their first, second, third year of college.

Good luck. There's a wealth of music out there to choose from, it's a matter of finding it. Maybe Jeanjean's "Carnival of Venice"? That's a lot of fun, but fairly difficult.

Here are some suggestions I've found to work well with my high school students. Of course, I'm not sure exactly how good you are or how long it takes you to get a piece learned, so every piece may not be best for you, but here ya go...

C Stamitz - Concerto No. 3
Tartini (Jacob) - Concertino
Weber - Variations Op. 33
Finzi - Five Bagatelles
Brahms - Sonata 1 (in Texas, where I teach, you can do movs. 2 and 3 and this constitutes a class one. I like these because they aren't too hard and the piano parts are easier to stay with than some of the other movements)

Those are just a few suggestions that I have used many times with success. Good luck

Saint Saens Sonata (Movement 1, probably)
Jeanjean Arabesque
von Weber Concertino
The 2nd movements of either of the von Weber Concertos
