For many years I played many arpeggios using the T XOO|XOO fingering for bottom line Eb (Eb4).
Recently, it was pointed out to me that that fingering is very sharp. On my Buffet the 1-1 fingering for high altissimo Bb is good.
Has something happened to my horn to foul up this very useful auxilliary Eb, or am I just numb and have been playing out of tune all these years?
Is the 1-1 useless on all Buffets?

1+1 is never a good option for eflat(on any clarinet). It is very sharp, I reckon you have always been playing it out of tune. Sorry!

The 1-1 fingering is notoriously sharp, however it can be very useful when it is difficult to use the other fingerings. I play a R-13 that is a few years old and this fingering is indeed extremly sharp for both the Eb and the Bb unless I lip it down. I use it most of the time when playing arpeggio studies in the Baerman vol. 3 but would never use it where the intonation would be noticable.

Mine's fine, but the Bb is slightly flat (Selmer Prologue). Hmm, a *narrow* twelfth! The Bb plays more in tune with 1-2. This swapping fingers between registers comes naturally after a while, just like playing in C major.
Going further up, the altissimo G and C speak remarkably well. Just goes to show how different manufacturers make different trade-offs, I guess.

My Eb is so sharp as to be unusable except at speed.
My Bb is a bit flat, I normally play it as 1-2 rather than 1-1, or as 1-1+RHsliver.

It's never a good note in the lower register, but I do use it and lip it down.
But as I use full Boehms I can use the forked Eb (xox|ooo) as an alternative where using the side key is impractical.

Happily, on both my Alto and Bass, the 1 and 1 plays well in tune. On some sops, a bit of pad rise adjustment has improved their 1 and 1 without noticeably changing the pitch of adjacent notes. Try it, Don

But you can always put more RH fingers down to flatten the long Eb - xoo|xxo or xoo|xxxAb/Eb - but only if it will allow that without being stuffy.

It makes the semiquaver F#-C-Eb-C G-C-Eb-C Ab-C-Eb-C G-C-Eb-C passage in Weber's Concerto #1 (Rondo - between bars 260 and 270) an absolute doddle using the forked Eb (xox|ooo) fingering.
