 Inconsistant Embouchure
Author: OmarHo

Hi everyone!
I have a major, major issue with my inconsistant embouchure. This has happened many many times before. You see, what happens is: I decide I want to take a day off or two then when I get back to playing my horn my sound is TERRIBLE, my embouchure makes me really out of tune and tone is spread out and everything. Yesterday, I took ONE day off- then I get back to playing and my tone is spread out, and just horridly out of tune. It's a drag because it takes me like a week to get used to my embouchure again that I once had before I took the day off. I use double lip if that helps anything. If I can defeat this problem then my quitting chance would be reduced! Thank you!

Solution: Don't lay off practicing!!! Take your mouthpiece to work or whatever, and shove it in your mouth and blow during your lunch break (do the high C test, work on centering your pitch, etc...). This will help your muscle memory, and may decrease the time needed to "come back" to the clarinet.

hi! are you sure it is an embouchure thing and not a support thing?
make sure there is no tension in the throat and that the only parts of you doing any work are the deep diaphragm and the embouchure.... do this with long notes changing register but keeping embouchure set. i find getting my support back the hardest thing after a break.

Are you sure it's not a reed thing? Reeds can dry out and warp in central heating in just 48h, and can take a while to recover. A warped reed can feel very difficult to control.

I found my answer, I found it in the Carmine (forget last name) embouchure article. It states something like " people who have a proper embouchure will take it easier coming back from a layoff compared to people with a questionable or unnatural embouchure. Looks like I need a more natural one. I knew my embouchure was unnatural when it took me about 5 seconds to prepare before I could put my m/p in my mouth. Thanik you everyone!
