Besides Band-in-a-box, is there something similar/better/cheaper in the same category?
I just want my PC to play some accompanying chords while I practice, mainly as a melodious metronome but also to spice up some of the duller etudes.

You can get Finale Notepad for free from the internet. Just write in the chords you want yourself and it will play them. Finale Notepad is very simple to operate, but you can't get ultra complex with it. It's nice to have around though, just for fun anyways.

In my humble opinion there is nothing better than BIAB especially for jazz. Practice is a lot more fun, it is fast, versitile and there are hundreds of files available for free at the yahoo BIAB group.

If you are interested in classical solo works, you might consider Finale Print Music for $50-$60. It has the capability to import midi files and you can find quite a few such files for clarinet and piano or orchestra on the internet. (Or other solos that you can transpose.) The advantage is that you can adjust tempos to your liking. BTW, a good place to start looking for midi files is Oliver Seely's site, which is mirrored here on woodwind.org with a link to the original site. A hint: sometimes the parent site has files before the mirror gets them.
I have also used Notepad in the past. It did not have midi import capability but, at least one time, Finale gave Notepad users a limited-time offer to add the feature for about $10. What makes Print Music more attractive to me is that it has scanning capability. I have an earlier (circa 2001) version of Finale and the scanning software that came with that didn't work all that well for me. I have had considerably greater success with the current version, however.

I second the vote for Smartmusic. I've been using it daily since Christmas (a present to myself) and it's just a lot of fun (certainly makes practicing scales and arpeggios much more fun).
Also, I think it sounds much better than BIAB...doesn't sound so "Midi-ish"

Yes, I third Smart Music. It is a great tool to use. Many classical solos (which I think you can get even more off the site, or you can somehow request to have one made. At least they made one for my sister), and fun books in there. You can test your sightreading skills with the easy books if you have a mike attached. You can also tune yourself. I use Smart Music religiously about 2 weeks before solo contest. You can also record yourself and listen back and with the accompaniment. It's great!
If you have any questions, feel free to email me about smart music. I may be one of their demo people sometime next year.
Also, if your have AIM, you can record yourself doing little ditties on the clarinet and then save them and have them to be your AIM noises when someone signs off/on and messages you. Rather fun!
