 Replacement pad sets?
Author: 'nother friggin' canadian

I want to get a replacment double-skin bladder pad set for a suffering clunker horn that I have. One Ebay seller says replacements pads are brand specific. Another says they fit most popular brands. Yet another says they are suitable for use on any Boehms system clarinet. They can't all be right! Please advise.

Thanks, Brian

I would drop a line to Curt at www.musicmedic.com. I've bought supplies from him in the past and have been quite happy.

Thanks for the recommendation JF... but I'm still not sure if pad sets are generally one-size-fits-all or brands specific. Do you know?

Order a pad set that's specific for your make and model of clarinet. Most suppliers will have to make up a set that has all the correct size pads as they usually carry all sizes.

If you have an obscure make or model, then measure the OUTSIDE diameter of each pad cup using verniers if using SKIN pads (that's the double-bladder type), or the INSIDE if using LEATHER pads with verniers so you can get the correct sizes - but pad sizes are only in increments of 0.5mm - so if the inside of a cup measures 8.2mm, round it to the nearest half mm (if between 0.1 and 0.3, go DOWN to the nearest mm, if between 0.7 and 0.9, go UP to the nearest mm - but if between 0.4 and 0.6 then that'll be a 1/2mm size - so the 8.2 cup will take an 8mm pad) and order that size of pad if using leather.

If the outside diameter of the cup is 10.3, then order a 10mm SKIN pad.
