You might enjoy this article in today's The Guardian newspaper. Taken from extracts of Luis Sophr's autobiography as it was published by the same paper in 1865.

What a fantastic article! It fits exactly the image portrayed of him in those famous pictures - wild hair, moody expression. What a character. I sometimes stop and think: how hard can it be to interest the next generation in this stuff with guys like Beethoven populating the archives?
