Benny Goodman - Weber Concerto No 1
Author: Ruth

Hi
I am using a recording of the Weber Concerto played by Benny Goodman for a college assignment. It is with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (conductor Jean Martinon) and was recorded in 1967, but does anyone know WHERE it was recorded? I've searched the Internet extensively but can't find out.
Thank you
Ruth

It doesn't say that on the liner notes?

I have the LP (RCA Red Seal, no. LSC-3052). It does not give the recording location. The liner notes are by John Warrack of the Sunday Telegraph and only give a historical rundown of Weber's clarinet writing including the 2 clarinet concertos on the LP.

A number of the CSO recordings from that period were recorded at the Medinah Temple, near North Side Chicago.

Believe it or not there were many recordings from that period actually made at their home in Orchestra Hall. I believe Medinah Temple came more into vogue as the years went on.

Benny studied with Marcellus in preparation for the classical recordings he did around then. Marcellus was a great admirer of Benny's recordings with the sextet but was not so impressed with him as a classical clarinet student. I guess we all have our particular strengths.
