 How much to pay accompanist?
Author: kenabbott

I'm giving a recital in the NYC area (NJ) and being accompanied by a good friend. We will have a total of five rehearsals and we'll give two performances. I want to pay her appropriately. Can someone suggest what the right amount might be? Among the pieces we're playing is the Grand Duo Concertante, which is a lot of work for the piano.

You should probably discuss this with her, but I've paid and been quoted fees from between 40-100 dollars an hour for rehearsal. The last fees I paid for accompanying for a recital were as follows, 40 per hour for rehearsal and 100 flat for the dress rehearsal and concert.

Ken,

here are Local 802 rates for performance and rehearsal as a guide. Looks to me like rehearsal rate is $43/hour with a 2.5 hour minimum.

Stay away from evening rehearsals - they pay same as performance.

Are your performances going to be public?

You said this is a friend. Is she professional or amateur? My gut leans toward the $40.00 per hour rehearsal rate and 100.00 each for performance/dress rehearsal.

If your friend insists on no payment or a low rate as a favour, then a present (eg. flowers, box of chocolates, bottle of wine) may be appropriate. I know that the monetary value would be a lot less unless you go mad, but a show of appreciation is worth a lot.

Yes, and to add to Mike Clarinet's suggestion, you might give her a gift certificate with perhaps a $100.00 amount on it. If she's a friend you probably know a little about her likes/dislikes. Plus flowers.
