 Mozart's Clarinet Concerto K 622
Author: ElBlufer
Date:   2006-01-08 17:32

At my level of playing, this piece is over my head. However, I would like to start working on more challenging pieces and I really enjoy listening to this concerto. What arrangement do you like best for the solo Bb clarinet (without piano is preferred, but with piano is fine). I thank in advance for your advice.

My Setup:
R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's
Bonade ligature

Take the time to read Keith Koons excellent article which was published in the May-June, 1998 issue of The Clarinet, Vol. 25, No. 3.

He critically compares the different published editions of K.622.

It is reproduced here:

Many, if not all, of your questions will be answered...GBK

Thank you GBK, that site really helped. However, I wanted to make sure that when he is talking about clarinet parts in the key of A, he is not talking about A clarinets.

My Setup:
R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's
Bonade ligature

ElBlufer, maybe you don't understand the difference between an A clarinet and a Bb clarinet.

The clarinet part is written in C (first and third movements) and in F (second movement). When played, as intended, on an A clarinet, it sounds in A and D. When played on a Bb clarinet, it sounds in Bb and Eb. The clarinet part is identical in either case. What is different between Bb editions and A editions is the key of the piano part. If you don't intend to use the piano part, this scarcely matters.

In theory, if you were a complete madman, you could play it on a Bb clarinet but sounding in the correct keys. This would mean playing the first and last movements in B and the second movement in E. I'm not aware of any edition published in this way.

A entirely separate issue is the fact that it is considered more authentic to play the clarinet part on a basset clarinet, which has four extra low notes. Most editions are for ordinary clarinet and avoid these notes.

-----------

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

To answer your original question. Try the Boosey and Hawkes arrangement. They do 2, one for Bb and 1 for A. The clarinet part is the same in both cases, and the piano is transposed accordingly as David says above. Look on Boosey.com, product code 001903X for the Bb version.

Thank you for the expenation David. Although I did know the difference between the A clarinet and the A mojor key, I was not understand prior to the post whether the "clarinet in A" part was for an A clarinet or for a Bb clarinet in the key of A major. For my own studies, I have decided to buy the TRIO DI CLARONE edition, but I will look into the boosey and hawkes edition in the key of Bb as well in case I ever need to use the piece for a competition. I thank you both for your advice.

My Setup:
R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's
Bonade ligature

As has been discussed (to death) before:

If you ever use the piece for a competition beg or borrow an A clarinet.

ok, in that case I will simply stick with the Trio di clarone edition and beg for an A clarinet for a competition. (if I dont buy one by then). That makes my life easier.
Also, does anyone have any suggestions for where to buy sheet music in the ventura country area in california? If no-one knows anything about this neighborhood, has anyone had experience with www.sheetmusicplus.com (as advertised on this site)?

R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's

You might enjoy having the Dowani 3 Tempi Play Along edition of the concerto. It consists of the clarinet music (printed on two, long sheets of paper with half-sized pages) and two CDs. The CDs contain a demonstration performance and two slowed-down piano accompaniments as well as an up-to-tempo orchestral accompaniment.

The accompaniments are in Bb instead of A, so you can noodle along with your Bb horn.

Some criticize the demonstrator's playing.

The tracks on the accompaniment CD are pretty long, so its difficult to recover from getting lost unless you hit your CD's back track button and start over. This problem goes away when you've listened to and played the piece enough to know what you should be doing from hearing the accompaniment.

Good luck. This project is never-ending.
