Hey, college audition time is rolling around and I have a few questions.

Clarinet is not my primary instrument, but according to my application there is an opportunity to audition on two instruments. So with this in mind I've been preparing a few things. I know I'm not busting out a Weber Concerto, but as long as I play my prepared material well I can't go wrong, right?

So I've been preparing the following...

Technical- Rode/Rose Caprice No. 8

Lyrical- Rose Etude No. 13

Please let me know if this is a good selection or if I need to change. My audition is in March, so I have a little time to change.

Thanks.

It might depend on the college.

I'm just now working on Rose 13 and will review it with my teacher tomorrow. I think its less pretty than Rose 9 and Rose 11.

I have a strong disagreement on tempo with my (great) teacher in Rose 9. To me, it wants to be taken slowly --like a Puccini Aria; he likes it mush faster.

In Rose #13, the E#,F#,E#,F#,D sequence at the end of the second measure before the fermata might best be played using the key fingering for the first F# and the middle-finger for the second: "flipping."

For tempo on Rose #13, be certain to be slow enough that the 1/32nd notes are played cleanly. For me, that's pretty adagio.

If I get badly beaten up at my lesson tomorrow, I'll add those insights to this thread.

If you can easily get a copy, you might want to have a look at the second movement of the Rossler Clarinet Concerto. It is gorgeous --and rated about the same level of difficulty as the middle movement of the Mozart KV 622.

Good Luck

Bob Phillips

Are you sure you want to do two Rose studies? Maybe some variety and contrast, showing off the scope of your abilities might work in your favor.
