 Firefox browser ad on BBoard
Author: johng 2017

I noticed a Firefox ad at the side of the BBoard. 10% of the visits to my business web site used Firefox in December. 83% used MS Internet Browser. I am wondering if some of you could give me the positives and negatives of using Firefox. Not clarinet related, I know, but since it is on this page, I thought I might ask.

Tabbed browsing.

You can right click all the clarinet messages you were intested and hit the "T" key on your keyboard and open everything en masse in the background and just read through each tab.

That's really the only thing for me that makes it truly superior.

You can use a front-end for IE like avantbrowser to get the same effect, but I like how the tabs behave in Firefox best.

Also being able to right click and copy a picture is useful in Firefox. I then paste into email or irfanview for editing rather quickly. Very useful.

Regards,
Stephen

In addition to Stephen's post,
- security (okay, it's getting better with MS' patches)
- RSS (aka "live bookmarks")
- easy integration of search tools (eg "d reed" on the address bar will open dict.leo.org against the term "reed")

I'm using FF almost exclusively (except from a few stubborn "msie optimised" sites).

I also find that Firefox freezes and crashes much, much, MUCH less than IE, and is much better with blocking popups and viruses.

Hi,

The only thing I found negative is that some streamiong website (Accuradio is a favorite of mine) do not connect with Firefox easily.

I have been using Firefox for at least a year but still prefer Outlook for my email over Thunderbird. There are many plugs-ins available for FF.

With Firefox, you can click with your scroll wheel (if you have one that does that) on a link and it will open it in a new tab. Also, the extensions are a great feature.
If you have a Mac, Safari or Camino are great too.

Firefox is free, so you can always try it and discard it if it doesn't work for you.

I use both Firefox & Thunderbird. Firefox has been generally reliable; Thunderbird with IMAP significantly less so.

No pop-ups. No viruses have gotten through (yet). Very little spyware and adware gets through. Automatically deletes cookies. Pages appear must faster. Screen looks brighter and clearer. Freshens your breath and whitens your teeth.

my favourite firefox features:

highlight any text, right click gives you a menu including "search web", and a google search of your selection pops up in a new tab

toolbar search plugins: I can search google, ebay, amazon, french/english dictionaries, PubMed Central, Scirius, or any of about 300 other search engines from the toolbar (you can install whichever plugins you choose). Why not add a "search the clarinet archives" plugin, Mark?

tabbed browsing, as above, lets you right click open a series of clarinet posts at the same time, without having to reload the main page each time, and without filling up your taskbar with new windows

it's not microsoft, and it's open source

highly reccommended, along with Thunderbird for email.

will search the BBoard and the Klarinet archives for the search terms, ordered by relevancy. (add "&sort=swishlastmodified+desc" before "&words" to order by date (desc)).

I I use the internet explorer exclusively, why? Because it’s free and integrated in the windows platform that I use. If I would install linux on my notebook than I would use Firefox. They both do what they have to do, browsing the internet.

It's true that MS Internet explorer currently has more pop-ups, but I'm just curious what would happen if more people are using Firefox than internet explorer... Then the advertisement company’s would write their pop-ups for Firefox wouldn't they?

Isn’t Microsoft only a victim of being to large and to powerful? Bill has done a great job and for those who don’t like Microsoft… than just don’t buy it. You can always use Linux, works great to, just a matter of personal taste….

Hi,
I'm a newbie, been reading the board for about a month. Firefox user, mainly because of the lack of popups.

Also for some reason a lot of websites (usually ones in my country) work with Firfox but don't with Explorer. It's just a problem with Explorer on my computer, but if Firefox works then that is what I use.

If you install custom browser toolbars to your browser, you might be inviting even more popups. And once the mechanism is hooked up, uninstalling the toolbar doesn't seem to fix the problem. My wife has done this to her computer and it's very frustrating. Many people would like to blame Microsoft, but it is the distributor/creator of the browser toolbar who created this mess. :o(

Firefox is fine, but I still see some problems with significant malware with it, especially now that it's popularity has been steadily increasing. Spyware scanning is still recommended.

The popup blocker works pretty decent, but I find it's update mechanism is inferior to IE's integration with Windows Update.

HI, I have been a Firerfox and Thunderbird user for almost a year now. I have nothing but good experiences with either thus far. I recommend that everyone be sure to update to version 1.5 in each case - then your updates are automatic.

I have been a user of Firefox since the pre-1.0 versions and it is in every way superior to Internet Explorer. What really hooked me was the tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking. Also Firefox handles privacy functions better than Internet Explorer (i.e. you can download programs to crack the passwords that Internet Explorer stores). Especially convenient is that you can press Ctrl-Shift-Del to clear private data instantly.

As a side note, I was wondering as the link to download Firefox begins http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead...... like google AdSense ads do, if you (Mark) get anything out of dowloads?
