 Premiere Rhapsodie publisher
Author: Amanda L.

I am getting ready to purchase Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie for an upcoming solo competition. Which publisher should I go with? I don't want to go with a publisher who has watered down the music, if you know what I mean. Your input is great appreciated! Happy holidays!

The Durand edition is the Urtext.

BTW - You can download a scan of the pocket score of the Durand 1910 edition here:

http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Music/Manuscripts/Premiere/

It is 46 pages (pdf doc) - 115.6 Mb ...GBK

Tried the link. It downloaded real fast, then slowed to a crawl. Then, when it was done, everything "froze". Anyone know why that happened?

Had to re-start computer. Reluctant to try it again.

It is a huge pdf - some computers cannot handle the size. I'm the one who created it ...

[Hi, Mark :) Hope your holidays are going well. Newer computer - should be okay with big stuff. I'll give it another whirl when I'm in a 'patienter' frame of mind. Maybe clicking and tapping while it's downloading something isn't the smartest thing to do :| Here's wishing you and Mrs. Sneezy and family a Happy New Year too. ]

The original Durand edition may be the urtext but it contains some major errors. The edition I have which fixes these errors is the Peters edition which also contains the Petit Piece.

Amanda -

Charles Neidich says that Debussy always intended the piece to be for clarinet with orchestra. The version with piano was published in great haste and has many small errors. However, Debussy checked the orchestra score carefully, and it corrects the errors, particularly where slurs and crescendos and decrescendos begin and end.

For much more, see http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=101441&t=101441

The Durand editions are printed on high-acid paper and fall apart after a few years. Also, they are (or at least used to be) oversize, so they don't fit on regular shelves. If you can find an accurate edition from another publisher, you should get that. It would probably be worthwhile to send an email to Neidich at Mannes and ask about the best edition.

I've had my Durand Edition (2 actually) for the past 30 years and it hasn't fallen apart.

The large file worked fine for me...

But I'm on a Mac.

Works just fine for me on a PC. I do however prevent Adobe Acrobat from running within my browser, which is just painfully slow and many causes of crashing.

To disable in your browser:
In Adobe
Go to File>Edit>Preference>Internet
and uncheck "Display PDF in browser".

Now when you try to open an unexpected PDF online you will be asked to save it or it will open in Adobe outside of your browser depending on your browser settings.

Regards,
Stephen (Piko)
