MO All-State Band Results/Col. Bourgeois conductor

We had our All-State auditions yesterday and they were very successful for three of our BBoarder's.

Tyler got 1st chair (for his 3rd time! Quite an amazing feat!)
I got 4th chair (up 10 chairs from last year.)
Clay/Claribone got 19th chair. (He's a really nice guy by the way! We met for the 1st time yesterday.)

I think we all were pretty successful. Around 170 clarinet players tried out and the kids that tried out this year are really good, and I would say overall better than the kids that tried out last year.

The best part is our conductor this year:

The conductor and clinician for the 2005-2006 Missouri All-State Band is Colonel John R. Bourgeois. Col. Bourgeois, USMC (retired), served as the 25th Director of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. During his nearly 40 years with the Marine Band, Col. Bourgeois served nine presidential administrations - from presidents Eisenhower to Clinton.

I'm looking forward to this amazing experience of being under Colonel Bourgeois's baton. We perform January 25th, 2006.

Our pieces we will play this year:

March of the Belgian Parachutists (Peter Leemans/ ed. John R. Bourgeois)
People Who Live In Glass Houses (John Philip Sousa/ ed. John R. Bourgeois)
Sea Songs (Thomas Knox)
Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral (Richard Wagner/ ed. John R. Bourgeois)
The last piece is a piece commissioned for the 2005-2006 MO All-State Band by Stephen Reinecke. I think we're getting the music when we arrive for the All-State convention.

I'm really excited and I hope us 3 get a lot out of our 3 days of learning! Just thought you guys might like to know.

What a relief to know that your Bourgeouis director is NAMED Bourgeouis! I thought you were being snide!

Congratulations on your skyrocketing performance. Clearly you're well qualified to advise almost anyone on how to play Rose Etudes.

BRAVO

Well done. Not that I'm recommending it, mind you, but when our son's high school band played "March of the Belgian Parachutists, " the guest conductor wore....yes....a parachute.

Wow, I hope Col. Bourgeois wears a parachute! That would be so cool!

No, I wasn't being snide and I hope it didn't come off that way! That's really his name and I checked the spelling like 10 times to make sure I spelled it correctly. I hope I'm at least somewhat qualified on those Rose pieces since I've been playing them for 8 months now. : ) Thank you for the kind words!

Yay, only 2 months until All-State!

Carrie -

Congratulations. After the excitement, what I remember most about All-State was that we played all day -- much more than I did at school. The second morning, the conductor said "Well, do you feel like a horse kicked you in the moutn?" And all of us did.

Practice lots of long tones and get yourself in top shape before you go. That will be barely enough.

Have fun.
