New MP is tight -- advice pls
Author: Chalumeau Joe

I just received my new MP (VD M13) and it's quite a struggle to fit it onto my barrel. (My old MP, a Morgan, slides on fairly easily, though).

What's the best manner to fix this? Should I:

a). Apply tons of cork grease and ram 'er in?
b). Sand down the cork?
c). Steam the cork (a friend did this and it made his cork much more pliable)?
d). Hope that repreated insertions will compress the cork over time?
e). None of the above

Regards and much appreciation for any advice.

I wouldn't keep jamming it in. I would go the sanding route but not overdo it.

How about just leave it on the barrel so it compresses?
A few hours at a time.

By sanding it now will make it smaller, and it will eventually compress to be looser.

I usually make corks a bit tight and let the joints stay together to compress the cork.
Some people compress the cork before putting it on, but i think compressing after gives a smoother fit.

I'd start with the Yamaha cork grease - its still the most slick commonly available cork grease AFAIK. It will cover a multitude of size issues. If this works, then pursue plan D.

If that doesn't work, you might try the Doctor's synthetic cork grease - I haven't tried it, but its probaby even slicker than the Yamaha cork grease.

Definitely don't steam - you don't want that much heat anywhere near a hard rubber mouthpiece. You aren't even supposed to wash these in water that's really above body temperature.

If that doesn't work - then sand or take it in to a tech and have it recorked. Its a small cost and no big deal, but ovbiously only do this if you aren't returning the mouthpiece.

Sand, grease, sand, grease till it fits, just a bit at a time. (I had to sand mine, I guess some mpcs come a bit "oversized" to fit even the roomy barrels)
I recommend La Tromba cork grease.
