 Weber 2nd Controversy?
Author: hinotehud 2017

I have not seen this topic addressed anywhere. Is there a disagreement about a note in measure #101 of the Polacca? This is two measures before "E" in my edition or the "ff con fuoco". I have recordings of Emma Johnson (English) and Serge Dangain (French) where each plays a B natural on beat 3. I learned it as Bb and always heard it that way including Neidich, Manasse, and Meyer. The accompaniment is playing a concert Bdim7 chord there in my edition which would call for a Bb in the clarinet part.

I, of course, can't be sure, but I can't think of anything which would go against your observation of the clarinet needing a concert Ab to fit with the Bdim7 chord. A concert 'A' with it would be very unusual for the time period, as far as I know. I can't wait to seriously play the Weber Concertos in college!

Yeah I had this discussion too when I was learning it. I ended up doing it as a Bb because a B natural made it sound like a wrong note!

The version performed by Andrew Marriner has him playing a Bb, and the version I have has it as a Bb as well.

Other than the Emma Johnson or Serge Dangain performances you cited (neither which I own or have heard) I have at least 10 different recordings of Weber 2 and none have the clarinet playing a B natural in that measure.

To cite one very strong case - Tony Pay, who is one of the most learned and respected scholars of authentic instruments and practice, on his 1988 Virgin Classics recording, uses a 9 key clarinet and plays a Bb in that passage ...GBK

For a taste of the difficulties in presenting Weber's 2nd in as true a form as possible, here are links to the Henle Urtext edition critical notes and introduction:

Much of what has come down to us through the years has been filtered through the Baermanns (Heinrich and son Carl).

GBK, I consider that recording The Definitive recording. When I performed it recently, I lent this recording to the conductor who edited EVERY part to match the orchestra accompanying Pay.

Of course, *I* didn't play it like Pay!

Thank you for these links. I have read a condensed version before. There is no mention of a discrepancy of the solo part or harmony in measure 101. I thought that if two prominent clarinetists would change a note, there must be some uncertainty about what Weber intended and that this issue might have been talked about in the clarinet community.

that recording by Serge Dangain is very good, by the way. I'd rate it as the best version of the 3rd mvt that i know.
