 CCM clarinet faculty
Author: Richie Hawley
Date:   2005-11-23 04:34

I have received many emails and noticed a several posts on this site asking about the CCM clarinet studio faculty changes and also application deadlines. ( CCM is the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.)

The deadline for applications for graduate and undergraduates this year is December 1st, 2005. We have an incredible performance oriented clarinet department with four professors; Carmine Campione , Ixi Chen, Ronald Aufmann, and myself (Richie Hawley). I am the head of the department and am proud to be on the faculty of CCM. All of our clarinet faculty is in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, except Prof. Campione who is retired from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra after 40 years. Ixi Chen, Carmine Campione and Ronald Aufmann, are exceptional performers and musicians and I am lucky to be able to perform next them every week in the CSO. Their exceptional clarinet playing and wonderful personalities translates into first-rate teachers!

-Richie Hawley
Principal Clarinet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
Head of the Clarinet Department, CCM

I have a recording of the Cincinatti Pops playing a slecetion of Gershwin tunes and your performance on "Walking the dog" is absolutely great. I'm sure your students are thrilled to work with you. In fact I'm going to put it my CD player right now!

Best,
-Sylvain

One of the teachers/players I have respected for the longest has now posted on the Bboard[and not even anonymously!]

Thank you for starting the thread, I had no idea Ms. Chen was part of the faculty at CCM now. I also had no idea that you were [the new?] head of the faculty- I played under Dr. Porter's baton in a Tri State band down here and she had informed me that Steve Cohen was running the department, I guess he was until he went to NW.

Thanks again for the info.

Mr Hawley played the best version i've heard of the Weber 1st concerto with the Cincinnati Orchestra in my first semester there (1996). Fabulous playing.
While i never studied with Mr Hawley, i did work with Ron Aufman (while Ron deKant was on sabatical) and really found him to be a great teacher, who inspired me to work harder without putting me down (though, came out with the brilliant "sometimes you sound like a professional player, other times you simply don't" when pushed).
Actually, i think of Mr Aufman every time i play the bass clarinet (this is another week playing bass with Philharmonia), he certainly is responsible for me "raising the game" in this department.

Ron is a fabulous teacher - more people should make an effort to work with him.

Curiously, this week i am playing in Philharmonia with a flute player called Adrianna Lis who studied out west with Ixi Chen, and speaks very very highly of her!

I had the good fortune of studying with Richie Hawley at CCM. He is a master teacher. He fundamentally changed the way I think about sound production and achieving technical consistency in a very short period of time. I will always be indebted to him, and I credit him with my success as a musician.

CCM is a great place to be as a clarinetist right now. They have generous scholarships and tons of performance opportunities, not to mention the wealth of clarinet knowledge all in one place.

Joe-

I'm applying to conservatories for the fall 2006 term and I haven't spoken with anyone from CCM with Hawley- can you email me or IM me please?

Thanks.

Excellent indeed. An acquaintance of mine, Ralph Skiano, studied at CCM and subsequently went on to capture the principal spot in the Richmond (VA) Symphony. Is still there, three (or is it four?) years later. I don't know who he studied, but they obviously did a great job transforming him into a world-class player.
