I just read the thread on musicality. It's not a hard concept to comprehend but to put into practice is another thing. I am practicing for the upcoming Christmas concert with our community band and am trying to peg the pieces technically, dynamics, rhythym and all. As it should be. I've taken the advice given here on practice technique, what to practice first, when to back out and am mostly holding on for dear life durring the practice. Much of the time I'm in a bit over my head. The caveat "do no harm" is more difficult than I anticipated and could be dome better from the other side of the stage. But the band has been very gracious. I am, however, thanks to advice given on this board, able to apply a few techniques learned here. There is a part in Sleighride with a triplet of eighth notes followed by a quarter note. I can get the triplet but cannot quite get to the quarter on time. So I play the triplets on time and let the quarter go. This also occures in a place with a quarter, followed by two eights and then another quarter. I play the quarters well and let the other clarinet play the eights. This way I add to the band's sound instead of detracting. As my skill increases I will be able to play the entire piece.
So back to musicality. It occures to me that one must have mastry of the instrument as it relates to that particular piece and the piece itself. There are several pieces I play from memory, Sumertime, Autum Leaves and Unchained Melody and can play them expressivly, musicaly. But that is because I have use of the instrument over that range and have an idea of how I want them to sound. But those pieces I'm just learning or don't have the expertise to master I can only hope to play technically and know that the expressiveness will follow.
Happy Thanksgiving

Carl,
We'll welcome you to our community orchestra. Fitting in your accessible notes like you described is a real talent. Getting the cooperation (graciousness) of your colleagues is a true people skill. Congratulations.
