 New Barrel

I am looking for a something to replace my stock Buffet E-13 barrel. I recently ordered a Fobes barrel from WWBW, but when it arrived it looked like there was a small crack in it (didn't go all the way to the middle) and when I played it, it sounded thin, overly bright and really strained in the upper register. Is it possible the barrel was defective/damaged, or is it just me? Also, what other comparable barrels are out there? I'm looking to keep this under $150-$175 if possible.

When my students play E 13 clarinets the barrel seems to me to be too short to play at A=440( at least at normal temperatures 16-20 degrees). The models of this Clar that I have seen have a 65mm barrel. Try a Buffet R13 66mm. Even a new standard barrel can make a difference. Some of my students like the Moennig. More resistance and a rich focussed tone. The Chadash barrel is reputed to be good but I haven't tried it.

All the best Chris.

Thanks Chris, I'll keep those in mind. I've definitely found the E-13 barrel to be too short, and I ordered the Fobes for trial I had WWBW send me a 67mm. It didn't do much very well, but it tuned nicely, right at A=442, and right at A=440 when pulled out a hair. Are the Moenig and Chadash barrels consistent, or do I have to order more than one and send back the bad ones?

I have a Chadash barrel. I can hear a small difference between the Chadash barrel and stock barrel. I also have another barrel (from the Festival model) and I also hear a small difference. I can't really say which one sounds the best.
The only way I can think of to describe the difference, is to say that if you have connected senses like I do, then the Chadash is softer (not in volume, like in touch) than the stock barrel.
Another reason why I don't like the Fobes barrels and other unique barrels is they don't have the metal rings, which I think help tp prevent cracking. If I'm wrong about this then someone correct me please.
I'd say a Buffet, Moennig, or Chadash barrel would be fine.

I use Chadash or Backun barrels.
