 Fobes Eb Clarinet Extension
Author: johng 2017

Someone on the Klarinet list asked about anyone's experience with Clark Fobes Eb Clarinet extension and didn't get much response, so I wanted to try it here. According to Fobe's web site, it is a small extension added on and Eb between the lower joint and the bell and has no keys, just a hole. It is supposed to help a stuffy long B and also to help adjust the 12th.

Has anyone tried this? When he says it adjusts the 12th, is that just the E/B, or are other notes affected too?

I tried one a long time ago and found that it mainly affected the E/B making it tune better and making the timbre and response more like the rest of the instrument. This would make sense as now the note was also coming from a tone hole rather than the bell. It made "the break" much less noticeable in playing and sounding. It was very nice and a very inexpensive improvement to the instrument.

The Fobes site describes the extension at http://www.clarkwfobes.com/Barrels.html. Unfortunately, there's no photo.

There are two design possibilities:

(1) The extension is the same length as the distance between the two lowest holes (plus a bit for the proportional greater length), with a nearly full-size hole. There's a design problem here, since the bore starts expanding well above these holes, and, without a new bell, the bore shape would be different.

(2) The extension is shorter, with a relatively small, high hole, as on the B&H and German instruments. There's less venting, but only a small bore shape problem.

The Fobes site says the extension corrects "the oversized twelfth interval," implying that it affects only the single E/B interval. I doubt that it would have much affect higher up.

A third design possibility would be one that Steve Fox suggested when he restored my early Selmer Eb contra-alto, which went down only to low E. He said he could make a full-length 1/2 step extension, to improve the low E and the middle B, which is particularly bad with metal bells. He said he would make the extension with an additional open key, with no lever, since having the key over the hole would affect the tonal emission. The extension turned out not to be necessary, since the low E and middle B were good on this particular instrument.

I made one of these for someone who had an Eb clarinet that was a HP (High Pitch) instrument.......it worked, together with a longer barrel.

I believe he commented on this board.

It does fix the problem.

As for me......I did it as a custom job, and frankly, I will not do it again.

SEE THE NEXT POST IN THIS THREAD FOR PICTURE OF THIS.

Here is jpg of the extension I made.
It did fix the problem, so I would bet that the Fobes extension would be worth trying.

Stewie -

Steve's instruments are his own designs, and many of them have a vent built into the bell, though I haven't seen his Eb.

He's a virtuoso woodworker If you have one of his Eb clarinets and are unhappy with it, I'd go to him for alterations.

Only for information: the principle of an elongated lower joint with a venting tone hole is a standard design for German Bassethorns from (Fritz and Herbert) Wurlitzer for already 65 years. I have attached a photo from my Fritz Wurlitzer Bassethorn from 1974 on which this venting hole is seen.
