Has anyone ever damaged a beautifully playing reed while putting on the mouthpiece cap? It happend to me the other night and I felt terrible.

Happened to me with the ligature. Threw it on in a hurry (big mistake). But there'll be other reeds.

Likewise with the ligature. Too many times to count now. So I put the lig on first, and then slide the reed in now.
About the cap, I've done that one on sax quite a few times. Not so much on clarinet.

How did you come to the practice of removing the reed before capping your mouthpiece.
YES, Basset, I've dont that, too --but only with my very best reeds.

I only cap it when it goes into the case, really. Probably not the best practice to leave it out uncapped, but that's what I do. Also, if I'm leaving it unattended for a significant amount of time so that it DOES need capping, I'll tend to be switching reeds as well.

Yup. Take the reed off, don't bother with the cap. Just leave it in the case for show, and to stop the mouthpiece rattling about. I always think the cap ruins the line of the clarinet anyway - looks like a pepper-pot stuck on top, just daft.

I cap the mpc when it's in the case, and I have a worn (and marked so) reed on the mpc, to protect the rails when un/capping with "sausage fingers".

I never, ever, use a mouthpiece cap at any time for any reason. You're fortunate the mishap damaged only the reed and not the mouthpiece as well. Instead, I put my mouthpiece in a infant sock in the case. Matter of fact, all my mouthpieces are stored in a box, each in an infant sock.

Yes - at my last spring concert. I had a beautifully singing reed. We had a pre-going -on -stage tune-up. I tuned up, put mpc cap on and sliced the reed from top to bottom. I then invented a few new words, mixed with some good old-fashioned anglo-saxon.
