Seems they haven't been paying their share of the National Insurance bill; now it's due:

Paul McCartney couldn't make a worse job of running the country than the crowd who are doing it at present.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

David must be refering to the government in general. The standard of British orchestral management is very high.

David, based on the hit tune "Send In The Clowns", here's a deal for you. A righteous swap across the seas--your clowns for ours.

BobA, we've just sent you Charles & Camilla, there's a start.

To return to the topic, this is by no means the only case where the Inland Revenue have suddenly decided to "reinterpret" rules so as to maximise the tax/NI take. Bear in mind that this is not "health insurance": National Insurance is just income tax under another name. The musicians will not be denied free medical care because of this. Everyone is entitled to free medical care regardless of how much tax or NI they pay.

As David says, it is a point of interpretation, not of getting it wrong as such.

David, Graham:

what do you think the impact of this will be on English orchestras? are the worst case scenarios for their finances and existence realistic?

First, it is likely that the government will understand that this kind of interpretational mix up is a very different story to simply failing to pay tax, and will want to reach a manageable agreement. This is being dealt with now. There has been a very large amount of public money (both from lottery funds and taxes) spent on orchestras, so to ruin them over tax bills would involve throwing that investment down the drain.

But should they decide to do that, only those orchestras that could aford to set aside funds for future projects will survive. We are talking about the survival only of a handful of big names, and the others would perish.
