Hi there,
Well ...........I've been away on my hols for just a week (lucky me !) and when I come back to play my trusty clarinet who has been patiently awaiting my return what do I find ?
Not only has someone been and exchanged my reed for a much stronger one but they're "flattened" my clarinet too !!!!!
Thankfully not literally but ................. I've not played for about 10 days in total and I'm finding that the reed I was using before I went away doesn't feel at all the same and my playing is unusually flat !!!
Is this a common problem after just a relatively short time of abstention or is it me ???
I'm a self taught player of nearly 3 years standing - of average ability I guess but somewhat mature in age !!!
Appreciate your views
Thanks
Sue

OUCH
I've had my horn out of service (travel and a re-build) for 4-weeks, and the right slice of the reed is cutting my lip.
I'm also "stuck" with a borrowed Yamaha plastic student horn instead of my re-incarnated Buffet, and everything sounds and feels different. Its sort of a good experience, but I've got an audition in a couple of days; and the rebuilt horn won't have much of a chance to settle in before I get all nervous.

Yes Sue, in my experience it is very common. If I have a time away from playing it is almost frightening how fast the "face" loses it, much faster than "fingers".

Did you practice while you were away?
When I couldn't practice and later play my clarinet it's always disastrous, whatever the major cause is(reed, embouchure..).
So the remedy, it seems to me, is to at least be conscious about clarinet even though you're away. For example, listen to famous clarinet pieces, working on the transposition , fingering simulations, etc.

Hi Lucy,
No I wasn't able to play whilst I was away as I hadn't got ym horn with me -I'll certainly not leave it behind again though if I can help it !
Thanks for your advice.
