This relates to a previous posting about the advisibility of a making a living with your clarinet, and having just returned from visiting my Long Island relatives I found it ironic that the one cousin doing the best career wise and all right is the one thats a clarinet player! (not in LI anymore the past few years) married to an flute player employed with a top orchestra yet.. its not that the other cousins don't have mulitple degrees and masters and experience, but even in the high tech fields and education fields, age IS a factor, leading to lay offs and so forth. Of course he is not just only a clarinet player freelancing (that was his first main instrument), actally he plays multiple instruments and although he did well freelancing and it was not all classical he is back to teaching at a university full time. But there you go, you never know. They have a house , and didn't starve, and has more secure employment than anyone of us with supposedly better prospects!
