I just received a new barrel for my R13 from ClarinetConcepts, one of the sponsors on the board. Dr. Allan Segal was a pleasure to deal with. He was able to work with me on my setup and provided a product that plays absolutely beautiful. I just want folks to know there are alternatives to the Bakun barrels. I'm sure the Bakun barrels are wonderful, attested by the many folks who play them, but you can get the same results at a much lower cost. The cocobolo has a beautiful finish. I have not been able to do an A/B comparison with a Bakun barrel, but I can't imagine getting any better results. I have no connection with ClarinetConcepts, just a happy customer. I just want to make folks aware of an alternative.

Does he have a website or email address? If he makes syntetic barrels and not only wood I would be interested (after 3 cracked barrels, I want my practice barrel to be syntetic).

You would need to compare both head to head to see what works well for you.
I had an Eb barrel from Clarinetconcepts that came with an Eb Clarinet that I ended up returning as it was advertized as having Silver Keys and they were nickel. So I had the barrel for all of 2 days, but it was gorgeous.
One thing to remember with the Backun barrels though are the inner dimensions, not just the wood nor the finish.

Blummy....so that there NO confusion, I was NOT the one selling that Eb clarinet.
As far as internal dimensions go, I always ask what kind of mouthpiece (exit bore) and horn the client has as well as what reason they have for seeking a new barrel. I vary the interior accordingly. Sometimes the response to my questions, and the resultant answer, negate the sale....ie there is an easier fix for the customer, or there is an indication that there is a problem with the instrument or even the player (heaven forbid).
Thanks to the original poster for the kind words. By the way, didnt you play pro doubling with Jackie Gleason's orch?

Are silver keys that important?
gee.
Here's a thought. If petroleum prices rise any further, wood clarinets will be cheaper than plastic one.

CPW - yes actually. I won't play a Clarinet that doesn't have them. Nothing to do with the sound, every thing to do with the "feel" and "grip" of the instrument.
And for Eb it compounds the problem. I sweat pretty easily and sweaty fingers slip around much easier on nickel keys.
(Don't worry though, my wife says I'm one of the only people she knows who don't smell when they sweat.)
So the Silver for me is so that I won't slip and slide around the instrument on a hot concert stage.

I know it has been discussed before, but I do not think silver is that much stickier, although I also prefer the feel of silver. Hi Ho.
Well, if gas prices continue to go up you can melt those keys to pay for gas.
Now then, back on track....
Some of the custom barrels do NOT have silver rings, or titanium, or diamonique or whatever. Difference? And some are shaped like gramma's spools of thread. Hey, maybe Coates and Clarkes make barrels too! Thats it.....Barrel patterns by Vogue and Simplicity.

Silver is not much stickier if it has much finger oil on it. But when it is clean and polished, I think it's certainly stickier.
I keep the keys really clean and it makes a difference to me, or at least I think so......
