difference between v12 logo and traditional
Author: jangjiman

I borrowed a v12 reed from someone because I wanted to try them out. The logo in the back of the reed was exactly the sameas the traditionals. The only difference I noticed was the difference of thickness in the heel. I there a difference in logo or was the reed he gave me just a tradtitional vandoren?

Nope, he gave you a V12. The only difference between the reeds is the V12 is a little bit thicker.

Steve:

There are a number of physical differences between the V12 and Traditional reeds, besides being "a little bit thicker" (your words)

V12 clarinet reeds are built on a 3.15mm template (.124" - hence the name V12). The V12 tip is 0.10mm (.004")

The traditional clarinet reeds are built on a 2.8mm template (.11"). The traditional tip is 0.085mm (0.0035")

The traditional reeds have a scrape which starts higher towards the tip.

The V12 reeds have a different (flatter) U-shaped scrape zone which starts lower - thus a longer vibrational area...GBK

ok thanks guys. I tried the v12 strength 3 1/2. They seemed a little soft but I like the tone alot better than the tradtitionals. I normally play on a traditional 4. Maybe that's why, I'm going to buy one pack of v12 41/2's and one pack of gonzalez FOF 4 1/4 reeds.

The gonzalez FOF are pretty stiff. To make that a fair comparison, I would try 4's instead of 4.25's.

On my comparison chart which is in the back of a catalogue it says that a V12 41/2 is the equivilent of a traditional 31/2 and that a V12 5 is slightly stiffer than a traditional 4. Most inconvenient. If you go to a V12 5 make sure you are not going too hard for your mouthpiece, they all have a range of recommened reed stengths so if it suddenly stops working with a stiffer reed, that might be why.

No.

Actually, V12 #4 1/2 reeds are about the same as Traditional #4, and V12 #5 is about the same as Traditional #5.

Over the years Vandoren has issued their own reed comparison charts.

Here are an older and a more recent one. They differ slightly:

EW... You BORROWED a reed. Are you planning to give it back?!
lol. j/k...

I like the traditionals better. The V12 just doesn't sound as good with me. It may work for other people though. It just depends what your embouchere is set for.

Also, the V12 box says that they are made for long facing mouthpieces. That's why they work well with my M15.

I play Vandoren V12 and traditional. Mostly V12 strength 3 and sometimes traditionals strength 2.5 or 3 (depends on the weather). I would put the V12 somewhere between the trads 2.5 and 3. If you usually play traditionals 4 then try both V12 4 and 4.5.
About Gonzalez I can only say that from my experience they get much softer quickly, and then they are stable for a long while. In a box of Gonzalez 2.75 I can get 10 reeds to be great right out of the box, but after about one day they all become too soft. I've tried Gonzalez 3 which is just slightly too hard from the box and after a day they also were slightly too soft. Maybe the Gonzalez cane is more problematic with the weather in my country, because I don't know why this happened, it's very strange.
