 Clarinet Players: Out of curiousity, what laptop model are you using?
Author: missclarinetist

Well, its back 2 college in just eight days and I'm frantically researching online for the 'Best Buy' on the web for a new laptop model with the latest tech. I'm currently selling this model of mine Toshiba A65 - last year's model for a better processor. I know this is probably not related to the Bboard, but I'm interested in getting a laptop so that I can hook up a keyboard to it for some music composition software etc... Have any of you done this before? What software do you use for composition? Sibelius, or Finale? What is the best setup for the music digital world?

Just gave up my sony vaio lap top for a Sony vaio desktopo --so that I'd have a numerical keypad --for inputting to Finale.

Personally, I love my Compaq tablet PC (TC1000). It can be used as a regular laptop, or remove the keyboard and carry just the screen with it's magnetic pen. It's a bit smaller than a notebook (the paper kind, that is) and great for taking notes in class: handwriting can be saved as images or converted automatically to text in whatever application you are using. I got it because of problems with tendonitis in my wrists (not an uncommon compaint among clarinettists, I imagine) and using a pen is far more comfortable than the keyboard, especially for work that is mostly point-&-click. My setup has a 1GHz processor, 438 Mb RAM, 60G hard disk, wireless, and runs on WinXP tablet edition. I must admit it's not as fast as another machine with the same specs, but the form factor is definitely worth it for me.

Apple Macintosh iBook G4 14" 1.33GHz, running OS X version 4.2
I use Finale for arranging, composing, etc. The set up works great and is fast.

Arg! Clarinet + Mouse + non-ergonomic keyboard = tendonitis. I know from experience.

HP ZD8000----Pentium 4 520/HT 2.8 gHz (to hell with a Centrino processor); 17" Briteview monitor (1440x900); numeric keypad ON THE MACHINE (love that!); and Sibelius for writing.....all for $1199 :)

12" PowerBook G4, 1.5GHz.

Check the prices and compare. Also bear in mind that OSX is superior for everyday things that the average user does. This baby doesn't crash, not to say that it can't, but in the rare instance when an app has, it's so easy to kill and then restart that app, no worries. I'm never using Windows again if I can avoid it.

I use a P2 Compaq. lol. I don't do anything on it but use it to get online while I am out of town. :P

Check out Macs (G4 powerbook w/student discount is about $800) or Averatec.

Finale is more universal with ppl writing music, so I suggest Finale.

I use a Toshiba SP 2100 with finale 2005 and a HP NX 9030 with finale 2005.

Try both programs sybelius and finale, you can download trial versions on the site. They can produce the same things, but pick the oNe that you find easy to use...

Both laptops work great with the programs... but then again, probably every Pentium 4 (and the 4M / Centrino (is also a 4M processor)) will work just fine... (even a P2 or P3 can run these programs without any problem...)

I just got an HP Pavilion dv1000. There were a bunch of rebates at COMPUsa a couple of weeks ago.

I got it because I likes the size (smaller than some) and it had a lot of memory and hard drive space. There are a couple of standard configurations out there. This one had 1GB Ram, 100 GB HD, and Windows XP Professional. Also, the monitor though small is bright and a widescreen.

I still love it.

IBM Thinkpad with Pentium M (Dothan Centrino). I got one of the lower end models. IMB is a very reliable company.
I use Sibelius for notation because in my opinion it is so much better than Finale, and for everything but notation I use Cubase.

Compaq Evo N115 I got used for $10. Not really the cutting edge, but for the price I couldn't turn it down.

Sibelius for music notation.

If you don't have a bunch of $$$$$$ "invested" in software for your Windows machine, I agree with several posters that you'll have a better life if you convert now to a Macintosh. There is so much bad systems design in Bill Gate's stuff. He's made soo much money making life hard for billions of us who use is stuff.

Earlier, I told you I'd given up my Sony Vaio laptop for a Sony Vaio desk top.

Well, it turns out that we can't live without a laptop. Need to take it to genaeology sites to take notes, ...

I used to use a PC laptop for in-car data acquisition while testing for GM. It was often very difficult to see the screen in outdoor situations. SO, this time, we go an HP with the brighter screen. If you walk the aisles, you can pick out the bright ones; thery're very obvious. A bright screen can be had at low price points, too.

My specs:
80GByte hard drive, (4200 RPM to boot faster);
1-BGyte ram (To avoid overcrowding system crashes);
DVD AND CD burning capability to keep back-ups of critical files. (I'd hate to loose a term project!) ;
15.4-inch screen (trade utility for carrying size);
Spare battery (for when the one you'r using goes flat at an awkward time);
Commodious backpack-style carrying case;

I don't trust any tie-down security system and choose to carry my laptop (and my bicycle and my buffet) everywhere; they'll have to pull them from my warm, dead hands.

Good luck with your choice. I hope you get a good, reliable one.

Yeah, that darn Bill Gates and crew... Oh wait, I'm one of them.

Lessee, I use a Toshiba Tecra tablet. The last time any of my computers (six of them right now) hung or crashed was... geesh, I don't remember when. But then I don't install very many freebee software packages and games. Nor do I purchase a peripheral because its chief claim to fame is that it is cheaper than everything else.

I try to help my family and friends understand computers and at work try to improve the documentation so that it is readable and discoverable. Most of the problems my family and friends have are slow access on the internet, computers over five years old, software over five years old.

Maybe we’ll get Windows Vista closer to the perfect operating system. Creating the perfect OS is similar to creating the perfect clarinet and mouthpiece for all kinds of music—it’s just darn hard.

Dear people,
OSs are religion. Do not badmouth each other's OS here; there are plenty of places on the 'net dedicated to advocacy groups, all either preaching to the converted or calling on fire and brimstone to be brought down on the blasphemers...

State what you have, and whether or not it does what you want it to do.

A very old IBM Thinkpad with a 550 mhz Celeron. I had a nice new laptop but it went to the University of Toronto with the teenager to get educated. After I put in a 40G hardrive and dumped WinME for Win98SE the Thinkpad works pretty good, too bad the screen sucks.
